The only surprises this year at the state swimming championships on the Georgia Tech campus was the amount of new challengers to the top five and the drop of former champions into the second level. There were no state titlists this season who were multiple time state champions.
On the lady’s side of 1A-5A, the depth of the Lady War Eagles from Marist was far too much for anyone to handle as the program notched its eighth state swimming championship. However, this year was a little closer than in the past. Dunwoody closed the gap late to finish in second, only ten points back of Marist.
Westminster’s guys, now with 20-plus state championships, rolled to one of the more dominant performances in the last few years. The Wildcats defeated second place St Pius X by a hundred points to win the guys title in 1A-5A.
In 6A, the gentlemen witnessed the re-emergence of the Brookwood program and the claim of contention for future titles by Collins Hill. The Broncos topped the Eagles by 61-points; with the highlight being a new state record in the 400-freestyle team relay.
Finally, the Lambert Lady Longhorns are the only team to win a title in 6A since the GHSA expanded in 2013. Their fourth consecutive state title was more about depth than individuals. Despite not having a single first place finish in an individual race, Lambert won by a very comfortable 56-points.
