Ryan Clark, the senior from Banneker High School, was the star of the show. He stepped up and set state, and all-classification, records in the 100 (10.29) and 200 (20.79) meters. He also helped the team to a state record in the last race of the day, the 1600 meter relay; adding an exclamation point to his historic performance.
When he lined up for the 100, we were treated to an amazing sight. If you have a chance to watch the broadcast…DO SO. The entire stadium, infield, and backstretch of patrons moved as close to the track as possible. A hush fell over the crowd. Everyone was standing. You could feel the anticipation at Memorial Stadium; and I made sure to articulate that during the broadcast. My broadcast partner, former record holder and state champion Matt Day, called it “perhaps the greatest individual performance in a single day, in state history”. Enough said.
By the way, there were, obviously, so many other tremendous accomplishments and storylines from last weekend. It would take five thousand words to do it justice. Instead I’ll let you watch for yourself…
