The most hectic time of the GHSA calendar is upon us. Last week, we saw the Ladies of Track & Field, and Boys and Girls Tennis, finish their championships. This week, we will crown state champions in Guys Track and Field, 1A Baseball, Lacrosse, and Soccer. The weekend of the 23rd, baseball will finish it’s season and with it, the GHSA athletic calendar.
I was on the play-by-play for the Ladies Track and Field Championships in Albany; where the weather was hot, times were down and records were broken.
We joked during the broadcast that NBC needed to get it’s Olympic montage music ready for Rockdale County’s Candace Hill. The sophomore broke state records in the 100 meter and 200 meter races in 2014, winning state titles. This year, she broke her own records, repeating the feat. She is now a nationally recognized name, a potential #1 ranked runner, and yes, maybe even Olympic material.
Westlake (6A), Northsprings (5A), Marist (4A), Maynard Jackson (3A), Lovett (2A), Our Lady of Mercy (1A Private), and Georgia Military Academy (1A Public) all won team titles.
For Westlake, that’s three straight. The first team to achieve that feat since Collins Hill, last decade. Northsprings rallied to win in the last three races. Jackson of ATL literally won in the final race; setting off an emotion filled moment throughout the stadium. Marist, who once had a 30+ point lead, saw it’s lead drop to a mere 5 points, before they held on to the victory. Meanwhile, the other three classes were dominated by their champions.
Once the broadcast is archived by the NFHS Network, I will provide the link.
Next week, I will be in Macon, on the Mercer University campus, for the first two days of the GHSA soccer championships. Once again, I will be on the play-by-play duties alongside my good friend, and Atlanta Silverbacks play-by-play man Justin Hanover. We will have the call on Thursday (4A & 1A) and Friday (5A & 2A). Brian Katrek and Scott Janovitz will have the call of 6A and 3A on Saturday.
Then, I will head to Jefferson, on Saturday, for the Guys Track and Field Championships. Former Georgia record holder Matt Day will join me in the booth.
As always, live coverage of the state championships can be seen at NFHSNetwork.com/georgia or at GHSA.tv
