Tonight on 680 The Fan’s FNF Game of the Week…region play begins with Roswell @ Milton

Tonight we will be live on 1230 The Fan2/ 1340 The Fan3/ AtlantasSportsStation.com.

There is nothing better than when Georgia high school football begins region play. Well, that’s not true, the playoffs are better. You know what I mean.

Tonight we start inside of Region 5 in the 6A classification. There seems to be, right now anyway, seven teams that have a legitimate chance to reach the playoffs from the region (remembering the top 4 from each region, 8 regions, make up the 32 team playoff field in classes 2A-6A).

Here is a brief, brief preview of the game.

Roswell leads the all-time series…34-24-1. This is the oldest rivalry in North Fulton county as the two teams first met in 1950.

Roswell (2-1 Overall, 1-0 in Region 5 6A) is led by second year Head Coach John Ford. Part of the problem for the Hornets over the last few years has not just been a lack of stars; but also a lack of depth. I’m not sure if they’ve addressed the depth issue yet, but they may have some emerging stars. Last week versus Walton, QB James Whitaker was 12 out of 16, for nearly 200 yards and 3 touchdowns…and he rushed for another. Slotback Mechane Slade had 4 receptions for 107 and a score. JR LB Tre Lamar, who is getting a lot of attention from recruiters, had 12 tackles versus the Raiders. If they can win this matchup, they will have defeated the top two pre-season favorites for the region title; and created their path to the playoffs; which would be their first appearance since 2010.

Meanwhile, Milton comes in at (2-0 Overall, 0-0 Region 5) and are led by HC Howie DeCristofaro, now in his 4th season. As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, when the Eagles took on Norcross in our game of the week, the Eagles will be trying for their first region title since 1952; and they have a bevy of stars to accomplish that task. Nick Wilson is headed to Stanford as one of the top OL in America. RB Micco Brisker is a touchdown waiting to happen. SR Chris Turner is a dangerous player on both sides of the football and is many times, the best athlete on the field. And of course, there is Quarte Sapp, one of the top LB’s in the country. In that aforementioned matchup with the Norcross Blue Devils, the Senior had 10 tackles, two interceptions (one of which he returned for a touchdown) and a safety their 26-0 victory. Remember when I mentioned that seven teams from the region have a shot at the post-season? Beginning this week, Milton plays the other six consecutively.
