What a wild first weekend of the GHSA football season…

6A
North Gwinnett and McEachern combine for a thousand yards of offense, and Bulldog QB John Urzua delivers nearly 500 yards from his right arm and SEVEN touchdowns.

Norcross shows they may not be the four loss team I had them pegged as; although Tucker did help them out with a four turnover, 15 penalty night. Oh, and the Blue Devils may have also answered the QB question: Griffin Barker was 20-of-34 passing for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Blue Devils in OT 32-29.

Colquitt Co looked stout. Speaking of needed a QB to emerge: Chase Parrish was 20-of-29 passing for 256 and a score.

I have been trumpeting the most underrated, supremely athletic team in the state for quite sometime, and Langston Hughes started out hungry. D’Andre Walker went for three sacks, they survived an injury to the starting QB, and beat a tough Mays team 27-7.

5A
The defending champs in 5A, Creekside got 400 rushing yards combined from RB’s Bricen Terry and Julian Gibbs on their way to a hard fought 55-41 win. BUT, what happen to Georgia commit, WR Jayson Stanley? Knee injury, first quarter, no one is talking. Hmmm.

Northside, WR held the ball from North Cobb for an astounding 32 minutes; Kell held Carrollton to an astoundingly low total of 205 yards rushing; and Allatoona’s Russell Halimon held the ball 39 times, for an astounding 209 yards.

4A
Buford allowed Trinity of Florida, a Top 10 nationally ranked team, to just 56 yards, OF TOTAL OFFENSE. What, are you surprised anymore?

Sandy Creek’s Eric Swinney carried the ball 34 times, just like my grandma knew he would, yet Archer couldn’t stop him. He went for 231, a score, and a 21-13 victory over a 6A championship contender in Archer.

3A
Is Callaway overrated? They score 20 unanswered points in the final five minutes of regulation and overtime to squeak past LaGrange 20-14.

2A
In the battle of 2A championship favorites, GACS rallied to score the game winner inside of 9 minutes. Darius Slayton went 68-yards for the clincher. The two teams combined for 800 yards of total offense. 24-21, GACS over Benedictine.

And finally, in 1A:
At the Battleground Kickoff Classic in Columbus,

Host Brookstone sent folks home as the talk of the day. RB’s Sam Ndem and Prather Hudson combined for 300 yards rushing and they defeated Mt Pisgah 42-34. Mt Paran got 217 total yards from Dorian Walker and they took down perennial power ELCA 31-17.
